If you are a refugee claimant, mental health services are covered through the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). As of May 1, 2026, due to Canadian government policy changes, IFHP covers 70% of service costs. The remaining 30% is the client's responsibility as a copayment. Interpretation services, if required, may carry an additional fee. Please speak with us if you have concerns about affordability.

Mental Health Assessment

Obtain a Medical Referral

You will need a referral from a medical doctor for a mental health assessment. If you don't have a family doctor, a walk-in clinic or community health centre can provide this.

Reach out by phone or email to schedule your first appointment. We'll discuss IFHP coverage and your 30% copayment, arrange interpretation if needed, and answer any questions.

Two Assessment Meetings

We schedule two comprehensive meetings to discuss your background, mental health history, current concerns, and any fears about returning to your country of origin.

How does IFHP coverage work as of May 2026? +
Due to Canadian government policy changes effective May 1, 2026, the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) now covers 70% of eligible mental health service costs for refugee claimants. The remaining 30% is the client's responsibility as a copayment. This is a change from previous policy, under which services were fully covered. We encourage you to contact us directly if you have questions about what this means for your situation — we're here to help you navigate it.
Who is eligible for IFHP-covered services? +
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) covers refugee claimants in Canada who have made a claim for refugee protection. If you are unsure whether you qualify, please contact us and we'll help you determine your eligibility — we're happy to assist.
Do I need a referral to access therapy? +
A medical referral is required for a formal mental health assessment and for psychotherapy services.
What languages do you support? +
Professional interpretation services are available in multiple languages upon request. Please let us know your language needs when you first contact us and we will do our best to arrange the appropriate support. Note that interpretation services are not fully covered under IFHP and may carry an additional fee separate from your 30% copayment.
Is everything I share kept confidential? +
Yes. Everything you share with your therapist is kept strictly confidential. We follow all professional and legal standards for privacy and confidentiality. We will always be transparent about any situations where confidentiality has legal limits.
Can I access services virtually or only in person? +
We offer both virtual sessions across Ontario and in-person sessions at our Dovercourt Rd. location in Toronto. We'll work with you to find the format that feels safest and most accessible.
What if I don't have a family doctor for a referral? +
If you don't have a family doctor, you can visit a walk-in clinic or a community health centre to obtain a referral for a mental health assessment. Many community health centres in Ontario also specifically support newcomers and refugee claimants — we're happy to help point you toward local resources.
